On Saturday, Oct. 1, the varsity cheerleading team is going to Columbia, MO to compete in the statewide competition at University of Missouri.
In order to qualify for the state competition, the team had to place in one of the top five at the regional camp over the summer, Ashley Porter, head coach, said. Their team placed first.
The team has gone through a lot of preparation for the competition, Porter said. She said they have been practicing their three minute routine every day they don’t have a game.
“That may not seem like a lot to some people, but it’s three minutes packed full of tumbling, jumping, and stunting,” Porter said.
Besides practicing the routine itself, the cheerleaders have been doing lots of cardiovascular conditioning and strengthening in order to perform the difficult stunts, Porter said.
Porter said she has high hopes for the team at the state competition.
“We’re going to compete with some of the best schools, and we’re aiming to win,” Porter said. “I think we’re capable as long as we just do what we do and stay focused for that three minutes.”
Natalie Komnick, sophomore, is one of the varsity cheerleaders and said the whole team is excited to be going to state.
“I’m hoping we place in the top three, but we really hope to win,” Komnick said. “We want to be number one.”
