New to both MHS and varsity field hockey this year is Jessie Dunlap, freshman. Not only is this Dunlap’s first year playing the sport, but she is the only freshman on the varsity team.
“The sport is really new, so it’s really fun and gives me lots of room to improve,” Dunlap said.
Despite being the only freshman on the team, Dunlap said the other varsity field hockey players are very welcoming and helpful to her.
“The team accepts me really well,” Dunlap said.
Dunlap’s older sister, Kelly Dunlap, junior, is also on the varsity team. Dunlap said she liked being on a team with her older sister because it helps her improve.
“She supports me,” Dunlap said. “I don’t feel bad when she critiques me, because I know the other players might not be saying anything because they don’t know me as well.”
Dunlap said she plays “anything but defense,” – usually a midfielder or a forward. She said the season has gone well so far. They have already played their toughest teams, and the remaining games are against teams that aren’t as challenging, Dunlap said.
Dunlap said the team’s defense this year is very strong and she hopes to improve the team’s goal-scoring and offense for the rest of the season.
“Right now our main problem is scoring,” Dunlap said. “We want to win the rest of our games by more than one goal.”
The next home game for varsity field hockey is at 4:15 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.
