Schools across the nation are embracing the idea of off-campus lunch for high school students. Instead of keeping students cooped up in school all day, schools are letting students leave campus for around an hour to blow off some steam and grab some lunch.
Some people would argue that there would be issues with this policy, but I guarantee there would be more positives than negatives. The district should implement off-campus lunch for its high schools.
Last summer, I moved to Missouri from Nevada. At my school, students were given 45 minutes each day for off-campus lunch. Even though I didn’t start my freshman year there and never experienced offcampus lunch, students who did attend told me how much they loved it.
The break gives students a chance to go home and relax for a while if they so choose. Also, if students have means of transportation, they have the convenience of being able to go elsewhere to get lunch, instead of gagging on the mystery meat served in the cafeteria.
If students wish to go off campus at lunch, the school could make it mandatory for the students to get parent permission. This would keep track of the students who leave the campus each day for lunch. As for the traffic issue, lunch shifts could be extended to ensure ample time for students to return to school.
With so many positives, there is only one question to ask. Why not?
