During Spring Break, some students head south to Mexico to party; others stay and relax at home. But Junior Principal Carl Hudson is offering another option: a school-sponsored trip to Washington D.C. to visit colleges and sightsee.
From Thursday, March 14 to Wednesday, March 20, students will visit colleges such as Georgetown University, Howard University and George Washington University and participate in activities such as bowling and movies. The cost of $250 covers transportation, hotels, activities and one “nice restaurant meal.”
“It’s pretty cheap,” Hudson said. “I’m a wheeler-and-dealer. Also, the trip is subsidized by the school.”
So far, 15 students have signed up. A maximum of 40 students can go on the trip.
“MHS is leading the trip, but students from other high schools in Rockwood can also go on it,” Hudson said. “We anticipate many more students from the other high school signing up.”
This is Hudson’s third year at MHS and his 20th year overall organizing this kind of trip.
“One year when we went to Atlanta, our group got to go to a local radio station,” Hudson said. “Another time we went on the CNN’s TalkBack Live show.”
Hudson emphasized the recreational aspect of the trip.
“We know it’s your Spring Break,” Hudson said. “So we still want to make sure students have fun.”
Hudson said the trip is a good opportunity for those who aren’t usually involved in college visit activities. Next year, Hudson plans on leading a group of students to Atlanta, GA.
