Although many other schools give honor cords for physical education, this will be the first year MHS will offer it. Felicia Durst, PE teacher, pitched this idea at a department chair meeting and the board agreed.
“I like honor cord because it awards more than one student,” Durst said.
Some people that take her class more than two times may play sports or just like gym class, she said. To earn an honor cord for physical education you must have six or more semesters of the class with an A.
For seniors to receive honor cords, they must meet the guidelines specified by each department. For example, to receive an honor cord for Social Studies, students must take seven semesters of the subject and pass with at least a B.
“70 percent my students get honor cords because I think we have a great department and history is relevant today,” said Amy Doyle, Social Studies department chair.
Honor cord applications are due by Friday, Feb. 15.
