Although students might be used to the routine of PLC Late Start days, MHS only experienced its second Late Start day on Monday, Sept. 24. Like the first Late Start, first period started at 8:40 a.m. Also like the first Late Start, more students than usual were tardy to class.
“We had 20-25 tardies per grade level,” Principal Dr. Greg Mathison said. “Which is better than the first Late Start, but still worse than usual Mondays.”
This is partially due to no extenuating traffic circumstances this Late Start such as the deer accident that occurred last time. Dr. Mathison reminded students, especially upperclassmen, to arrive on time on Late Start days.
“We count tardies even if it’s not a normal Monday,” Dr. Mathison said. “And upperclassmen can lose parking privileges if they have too many tardies.”
Dr. Mathison said there were less crowding issues this Late Start because the Commons was shut down earlier and more students stayed in the gym and library. Dr. Mathison received positive feedback from students and teachers regarding the second PLC Late Start.
In addition to some adjustments in procedure, the second Late Start day also had a community service component. A group of students sold Krispy Kreme donuts to raise awareness for leukemia.
“Every Late Start day from now on, we’ll have a different group do some sort of community service in the school,” Dr. Mathison said. “So PLC Late Start days will now give back to the community.”
