Stepping over dozens of rows of feet on the way to first hour may now be a thing of the past. On Monday, Mar. 12 over the intercom, students were informed of the new rule that after 8 a.m., they are no longer allowed to be sitting the hallways and must stand.
“It was a result of teacher concerns because hallways were being blocked,” Senior Principal Jon Schultz said.
Students would not stand when teachers and other students were trying to navigate through the hallways, Schultz said.
While there is no consequence for sitting in the halls after 8 a.m., Schultz said, refusing to stand when asked by a teacher would be considered insubordination which may warrant ISS.
Rachel MacChesney, sophomore, received these consequences on the first day the new policy was put into place.
MacChesney said she was sitting down when a teacher asked her to stand up. MacChesney said she asked why and was told that students sitting were blocking the hallways.
MacChesney said she told the teacher she thought students standing in the halls took up more room than students sitting, refused to stand up and was consequently written up for insubordination.
“I feel [the policy] doesn’t really do anything,” MacChesney said. “I think students take up more room when they’re standing in the halls than when they’re sitting down.”
MacChesney said she does not think the policy nor the consequences are fair.
“I think they should change the policy,” MacChesney said.
