Monday, Nov. 28 through Tuesday Dec. 6, there was a book drive held collecting new and gently used books. This drive is a part of Giving Month here at MHS. They started picking up the books Wednesday, Nov. 30 and then came around again Thursday and Friday to collect.
“I think this has been a very successful drive and will have a positive impact on the people receiving them,” Alex Nelle, social studies teacher, said.
Lauren Jacobs was the one who came up with the project for her community service class. Jacobs has collected some other books from other places, but at MHS donated close to 900. Jacobs said she has decided to donate the books to the St. Louis Public School system.
“It just seemed like an effective project that seemed like it could help a lot of people, and that’s why I chose to do it,” Jacobs said.
Nelle’s community service class has done several drives, but this is the first drive they have done for books. Some of the other drives they have done are the winter jacket drive earlier this month, blood drive, food drives, a drive for Joplin (last year), and Pennies for Pasta.
The competition was between 5th hour classes, but Alex Nelle’s community service students were collecting during 4th hour. In second place was ROTC, and in a close third with only nineteen books less was Ashley Porter’s AP Psychology class. The winning class was Maria Oliver’s language arts class, and they will be receiving a pizza party Friday of this week.
