With library construction fully underway, routes to take to class, along with sections of lockers, have been prohibited for student use. What once used to be a hotspot for senior lockers now is closed off due to the library expansion.
However, the staff of MHS could not control this change. The construction company gave an official notice to clear all students out of the designated area, which was the hallway of lockers next to the “down-only” main staircase. They justified the notice by saying the construction could be a potential safety hazard to students.
“With construction going on, that area could get very dangerous and dirty with all the dirt and debris,” Assistant Principal Carl Hudson said. “All the dirt could get into their lockers.”
Regan Cormak, senior, was not pleased to discover a note on her locker saying she would have to relocate within the next few days of receiving the notice.
“I’m pretty disappointed in this breakdown of the locker process,” Cormak said. “If they knew they were going to eventually be unavailable, I don’t understand why they would make those lockers an option at orientation.”
The students in that hallway, who were mostly seniors, all went to Debbie Marks, freshman secretary, for relocation.
Cormak’s locker got switched to a corner of the third floor by the upper stairwell. She said that it is too far out of her way to be of any use.
“As seniors, I think it was unfair we were asked to move,” Cormak said. “I can’t use my locker at all anymore and I just wish we were notified sooner so I could have picked a locker that worked with my schedule.”
The construction in that hall is predicted to take six to eight weeks to complete, however, after construction is over the students who were relocated must stay put.
“It took time relocating everyone,” Marks said. “Where they are is where they’re staying. Some students were upset by the change but it is out of our hands.”
