Ladies, the pressure is off.
This year, STUCO members have decided to discontiue the tradition of the Turnabout Dance, the one dance a year in which it is customary for the girls to ask the guys. The dance will be replaced by a winter mixer on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
“Turnabout has a reputation for being a ‘boyfriend/girlfriend’ dance,” STUCO President Nevatha Mathialagan, senior, said. “We want to encourage more people to come.”
The theme of the mixer is “Neon Night” and students are encouraged to wear neon or white clothes that will glow under the blacklights. T-shirts will be on sale the week of the dance for $10.
Tickets to the mixer are $5 and the concession stand will be open for students to purchase food or drinks during the event. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
“Generally I think people like [the idea] because they’re ready for something new,” Mathiagan said.
Mathialagan said the spirit week leading up to the dance will include Get Up and Go Day (in which students are enouraged to bring stuffed animals), Ugly Sweater Day, Superhero/Villain Day and Mustang Spirit Day.
“I’ve heard from people that they’re excited about it,” Tracey Waekerle, STUCO sponsor, said.
Abby Jeffries, senior, said the mixer is a good alternative because people can dress casually and girls don’t have to buy dresses and shoes.
“I think it is a good idea that they are making it a mixer now because now people can dress more to the theme and have more fun,” Jeffries said.
