When most people think of competitive teams, they think of sports. However, the MHS Academic Team is starting to compete again after being inactive since 2010 because of the players’ time consuming schedules.
Pete Kahn, hall monitor, is the first year head coach for the team.
“I competed in high school and it was something that I enjoyed doing,” Kahn said.
Academic competitions involve a series of questions that cover a wide range of topics such as Literature, Science, History and many others. Teams and individual players who place high in competition receive medals and trophies. Kahn said he would be satisfied to see his team place in the top half of the event this Saturday based on the fact that almost all eleven members are new to academic competition and many high schools competing on Saturday have had success in past years.
Logan Jardine, senior, is a rookie on the team and already gaining knowledge in different aspects.
“Something that I really like about it is that I get to answer and learn random facts,” Jardine said.
He also said that he enjoys his new teammates and learning more about them.
Teams thrive when the chemistry between each teammate stays positive and influential. The MHS Academic team has great team chemistry and growing knowledge that can help them climb the standings in upcoming events.
At the De Smet Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 12, the team finished 8th our of 22 teams. Suhas Bobba, junior, tied for tenth place individually.
