Library celebrates Teen Read Week

This past week was Teen Read Week, an event organized by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YELSA) that focuses on emphasizing the fun of reading.

Lee Mitchell, head librarian, said every year YELSA dedicates a week to reading for entertainment. Any school or public library can participate. Mitchell said MHS usually hosts some sort of trivia event. They sometimes give out small prizes and gift cards, but this year Teen Read Week came too close to Banned Book Week to do so.

There isn’t a set list of books; Mitchell said the best part about the week is just encouraging students to read.

If there was one thing she could change, Mitchell said it would be nice to have more time between Banned Book Week and Teen Read week as it always sneaks up on the librarians.

According to the YALSA blog on their website, the theme for this year was “It Came From The Library!”
