Al Saladin has been substitute teaching for 14 years at MHS, but taught high school social studies for another 31 years. He sat down to answer some questions and put rumors to rest.
What’s the story behind “folks, friends, neighbors?”
That’s an original from me! I don’t really like saying class, or kids, or students, or anything like that. I just thought ‘folks friends neighbors’ sounded better. I’ve been saying it for years.
If you were an animal, what would you be?
A rabbit.
Did you really win the lottery?
That’s a rumor. It’s been going around for years. No, I’ve never won the lottery.
How long have you been teaching?
I taught social studies for 31 years, and I’ve been subbing at Marquette for 14.
Is there a story behind the all of your gold bracelets?
Well my philosophy is, if you buy it, you wear it. Why would people buy gold and then just pack it away?
What’s your favorite movie?
Gosh… oh gee, that’s a tough one… ‘Wuthering Heights.’
Favorite childhood memory?
Going to grandma’s house for Thanksgiving and Christmas. My birthday is actually on Christmas, so it was always kind of forgotten. I would get a quarter. That was big money back then.
What’s your favorite food?
Chicken. Fried. Baked. Stewed.
What’s your biggest strength?
Always being positive.
What’s your biggest weakness?
Too easy going sometimes.
