Samuel Vences, sophomore, is a student in Fashion Fundamentals because of his love for fashion. He even uses a fashion rule while picking out clothes in the morning.
“You can’t wear a big shirt with skinny pants. It’s better to wear a skinnier shirt with bigger pants,” Vences said.
Vences prefers to dress for the colder months because he has the ability to experiment with different elements of fashion, such as layering.
“You can have full freedom with sweaters but also coats and pants,” Vences said.
Leah Cassely, senior, is a manager at Maurices, a clothing store in West County Mall. Cassely said Maurices carries more reds, greens, and browns as the season progresses, and flared bottoms are popular as well.
“Last year, we had skinny and straight jeans and that was it,” Cassely said. “Flare is really coming back this year. And, not as much distress.”
Clothing stores like Maurices have to make predictions as to what trends as the season changes. Mallory Farner, fashion teacher, explains how companies are able to make these predictions.
“The first line of defense is looking for different things that celebrities are wearing. They wear it, then it moves down to us,” Farner said.
Farner also broke down additional fall trends she’s noticed throughout the school.
“Knitwear is in, UGGs are still popular… any small boots, especially with some height, are in right now, and denim is always popular,” Farner said.
With all these trends it’s hard to know where to look to find inspiration for fall outfits. Farner recommends social media such as Pinterest, Instagram, and a new form of social media, Lemons8, to help find fall inspiration.
With temperatures ranging on average 70-50 degrees in the fall, many have the privilege to have versatile outfit choices. This is the reason fall is science teacher Jennifer Holman’s favorite season to dress for.
“You can wear short sleeves with long pants, and vice versa,” Holman said.
While in a girl band named Girls Night Out, Holman was able to wear outfits that sometimes included menswear or camo patterns for her performances. These outfits helped cultivate Holman’s personal style, and even influenced her to make combat boots her go-to fall accessory.
