Ray Holmes, librarian, speaks to Robin Craig’s language arts class about summer reading opportunities.

In the last couple weeks of school, the library staff has been promoting different summer reading programs students can get involved in.

Brittany Sharitz, librarian, said there are several summer programs through the MHS library.

“This year, we are doing a three book summer challenge,” Sharitz said. “If you complete it by the time you return in August, you will receive a prize.”

Even if students are unable to access a library during the summer, the library offers online checkouts at no cost year round. Additionally, all students have an electronic library card because they are students in the Rockwood School District, Sharitz said, which will allow students to check out books via Destiny.

The library also offered a program where students and staff could fill out a Google form based on their preferences to get personalized book suggestions to kickstart summer reading, Sharitz said.

Robin Craig, language arts teacher, said that summer reading programs help students prepare for the upcoming school year by keeping up with comprehension and vocabulary.

“It makes it much easier to transition into reading during the school year,” Craig said. “The style and analysis skills that students are introduced to need to be continuously worked on in order to be prepared for their next Language Arts class.”

“It improves your mind. It’s a fun way to pass the time instead of being on my phone.”

Besides educational benefits, summer reading also gives students an opportunity to find another form of entertainment.

“Reading is a good way to look into someone else’s lens and hear someone else’s story,” Craig said.

Daniel Perz, freshman, said he enjoys reading during breaks from school while also exploring a variety of genres to be a well-rounded reader.

“It improves your mind,” Perz said, “It’s a fun way to pass the time instead of being on my phone.”
