El Troquero, located at 185 Hilltown Village Center, is a locally owned and operated restaurant that serves many different types of Mexican cuisine.

Although you can order food to carry out, El Troquero is designed to resemble a traditional sit down restaurant.

Upon entering, there’s a reception desk and behind the reception desk is a bar and TV where adults can enjoy refreshments and watch sports. Parallel to the bar is the common seating area, which has multiple tables with comfortable leather seating and Hispanic decor hanging from the ceiling and the wall, which captures the essence of the restaurant and enhances the experience. Some of the decor features posters of trucks labeled “El Troquero,” which, when translated to English, means “The Trucker.”

Once seated, I was treated kindly by the servers, who were helpful in describing what each and every item on the menu was. The first item I received was complimentary chips and salsa, which gave me something to snack on while making my meal selection. The salsa was mild and flavorful but was not too filling as I still had plenty of room to eat my main entree.

Their menu of entrees features an assortment of burritos, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas and much more. I ordered the “Enchiladas El Troquero,” which is an order of three cheese enchiladas topped with shrimp, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes.

Because I’m not a big fan of seafood, I requested to substitute the shrimp with chicken and the servers were accommodating. El Troquero also features a vegetarian menu which gives plenty of options. My enchiladas were rich in flavor, as the cheese and sauce melted down on sour cream on top of the chicken enchiladas. The serving size was also large, so it really kept me full.

Afterward, I looked through some of their dessert options and struggled to come to a conclusion. I asked my waiter for a recommendation and he recommended that I purchase the Flan (Mexican Custard). When it was served, it was topped with whipped cream, sprinkles and chocolate sauce. I wouldn’t describe it as being very custard-like, however. The texture of the flan was more like gelatin, and although I didn’t believe it was bad, I wasn’t blown away by it. However, I would highly recommend it for those who are fans of gelatin based products as it was still quite delicious.

The pricing is a bit on the expensive side. Individually, my order cost $21.10 with tax. This included a main entree for $12.75, a dessert for $3.75 and a soda with unlimited refills for $2.49. However, when taking into context the style of the restaurant, the price is justified and there are cheaper ways to eat than the way I did.

Overall, the quality of service, the setting, the taste and portion size of the food makes the high price valid. I would give my experience an overall 4.5/5 stars. El Troquero is a great restaurant if one is looking forward to spending quality time with family or friends while enjoying great food.
