Not many students can say they have traveled out of the country, but an even smaller amount can say they have traveled to seven different countries.
Kathryn Fairlamb, senior, has traveled to seven different countries throughout her life, and she will increase this number to eight by the end of next year.
“I’ve been to Italy, Scotland, England, Ireland, Germany, Austria and France,” Fairlamb said. “I’m going to Nicaragua on a mission trip with my church for a week at the end of June.”
Through her European destinations, Fairlamb said she traveled with her parents, brother, aunt, uncle, two cousins and her grandparents. Fairlamb said for Nicaragua, her first trip out of the country, she is looking forward to traveling with friends because she thinks it will be a fun experience.
“My favorite country was Italy because they have really good food and I got to meet my distant relatives too,” Fairlamb said. “I loved the pasta with pesto. Pasta in Italy is a lot more natural and homemade.”
Fairlamb said her relatives are from Genoa, Italy, and her and her family stayed with their grandma’s cousin who owns a hotel and restaurant.
“From all my travels, I’ve learned about different cultures and the differences between countries and how we all aren’t the same,” Fairlamb said. “I now have a better appreciation for other cultures.”
Fairlamb plans to study abroad in college and she said she would love to travel to Africa, more specifically Kenya.
Fairlamb is experiencing a new continent this summer when she travels to Nicaragua.
“I’m building houses and hanging out with the kids and in the town,” Fairlamb said. “It will give me a better view on what poverty looks like.”
Out of all her travels, Fairlamb said her least favorite memory happened in the Parisian airport on her way home from France.
“In fifth grade, we had to run through the airport in Paris to catch our flight home, but my grandparents didn’t make the flight because they couldn’t run as fast,” Fairlamb said. “They were stuck in Paris for two days before they could catch a flight home.”
Fairlamb said her favorite memories include hanging out and spending time with her family, especially since she was able to grow closer to her cousins.
