On Monday, Sept. 24, the MHS Varsity field hockey team made history. For the first time, the team defeated Lafayette in an overtime victory of 2-1.
The Varsity girls knew just how huge the victory was.
“In the whole of Marquette field hockey history, we’ve never beaten them in a Varsity-level game,” Jacqueline Lugo, senior, said.
Sydney Vaughn, junior, scored the overtime goal that resulted in the team’s win.
“It all happened so fast that I didn’t really have time to think,” Vaughn said. “I just had my stick there and the ball went into the goal.”
Morgan Barker, junior, said everyone on the team had a common goal going into the game, to beat Lafayette, and their steadfast determination resulted in their victory.
“We all wanted it very badly,” Barker said. “Not a single person slacked off.”
Lugo said the whole team communicated well during the game, foreshadowing a victory.
“After Jessie Dunlap scored the first goal, I knew we actually had a chance at winning,” Lugo said.
Vaughn said she feels privileged to be a part of the team who finally beat Lafayette.
“We finally ended Lafayette’s reign,” Vaughn said. “I feel really lucky.”
Coach Rick Regina, language arts teacher, knows the victory was a big deal for the girls.
“I’ve been coaching for 13 years and we’ve never won,” Regina said. “It was definitely exciting.”
Regina said the teams past losses against Lafayette were not a result of being better or worse.
“Both teams have been equally matched,” Regina said. “It just seemed like Lafayette caught all the breaks. This year was the opposite; we had the opportunity to win and we hit it and scored.”
Now that they’ve beaten their arch-rival, which school poses the biggest threat to MHS Varsity field hockey? Vaughn said St. Joseph’s Academy, who the team has beaten in the past.
“They’ve been running from us since we beat them in the quarterfinals freshman year,” Vaughn said. “It’s always a fun game and very competitive.”
