On Tuesday, Nov. 1, the boys’ varsity soccer team got the chance to face Eureka High School in districts. After a long game, MHS lost with a score of 2-1. Christopher Kenny, boys’ varsity soccer coach, stated that he was disappointed because there were many good chances in the game to score, but they weren’t taken advantage of.
“Eureka scored a deflection goal and won the game with a penalty kick,” Kenny said. “I think they played with more passion than us, also.”
The soccer team had previously beaten the Eureka team this season 3-2. Another blow to the team was that part way into the game, Keith Grieshaber, sophomore, had a shoulder injury during the game and had to leave.
Kenny said that even though MHS lost this game, the team can use this game as motivation for next year. Other players agree with Kenny that returning players can take something good away from this loss.
“This game will help players next year realize that once it’s done, it’s done,” Mark Goldstein, senior said.
Goldstein also said that he can’t complain too much because this was “an awesome year” for the varsity boys’ soccer team. The final score for the season was 20 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses.
Will Valentine, senior, agree that this season can teach players a lesson and that this was a good year, although he said the game was hard to watch.
“This could teach returning players to work for what they want,” Valentine said. “I think this season we played great and had a good record too.”
