They’re parading around MHS in large green polo shirts and long plaid skirts. No, this isn’t the 90s. It’s “Turn-Back-the-Clock” day for varsity field hockey.
“I had these old uniforms in my cabinet from 2001,” varsity coach Richard Regina said. “Over the summer, we talked about wearing them one day during the season. We were inspired by some professional teams that sometimes wear their old school uniforms.”
Coach Regina said the team is currently in a rough stretch of games.
“We’re in the middle of facing ten very difficult schools,” Regina said.
Coach Regina said the spirit day would help boost morale in the team, as well as shift focus from the results of the games to just looking forward to playing.
“Yesterday, when I told the girls we were wearing the old uniforms the next day, they were very excited,” Coach Regina said.
This year is the first year the team wore the old uniforms, but Coach Regina said there is a possibility this might become an annual tradition.
Tonight, varsity field hockey will face Visitation Academy at MHS.
“Visitation has a good team, but we definitely have a chance at winning,” forward Maren Gandlmayr, sophomore, said. “We’re wearing these old uniforms in the game, and I’m excited to see how we play in them.”
Gandlmayr said the uniforms show how field hockey has evolved as a sport.
Sweeper Kelly Dunlap, junior, said the change in uniforms was different and interesting.
“A lot of people are noticing field hockey more because of this ‘Turn-Back-the-Clock” day,” Dunlap said. “Field hockey is becoming a bigger sport in the school; we’re improving every year.”
Last year, varsity field hockey made it into state quarterfinals, the first time in MHS history.
“Hopefully, these uniforms won’t limit our performance as the polos are a little restricting,” Dunlap said. “But we’ll play through it.”
