The boys varsity soccer home-opener against Francis Howell North proved to be victorious with a 5-0 result. This was the fourth game of the season and the game to changed their 3-0 record to 4-0.
The first goal of the game stemmed from a handball in the penalty box from the opposing team, allowing Keith Greishaber, sophomore to secure a 1-0 lead.
Greishaber then went on to score the second goal with a high shot over the goalie’s head.
“I think Keith’s second goal was the best play of the game. It was pretty,” varsity coach Chris Kenney said.
Nick Werner, sophomore, agreed.
“The best play of the game had to be Keith’s second goal. It put us ahead 2-0 and then we just took over and dominated from there,” Werner said.
Following that play, Jake Peters, sophomore, put the nail in the coffin to make the game 3-0. After being up by three goals, Kenney started substituting the starters more.
However, that didn’t affect the Mustangs’ scoring abilities. Two more goals were scored later in the game by Jordan Singer, senior, off of a head ball and Jeff Silver, senior, off of a fast breakaway late in the game.
“We did really well with getting the ball out wide, opening up space and just dominating in the center of the field,” Werner said. “We won almost every head ball and fifty-fifty ball which led us to scoring, but we can’t get too satisfied with this win. We have to stay hungry and want more.”
Both Werner and Kenney have high expectations for the team this year. They made it their goal to win the conference, win districts, beat rivals Parkway South and Lafayette, never lose three games in a row, and to never be satisfied.
In order to achieve all this, and to solve the problems present in their first home game, Kenney thinks the team needs to work on seeing the whole field, making quicker decisions with the ball and staying organized on defense.
“The other team had one or two guys that really knew how to play and tried to take the defense on, but they did really well and shut them down,” Werner said.
