The freshman girls basketball team played its first game of the year against U-City in the Lindbergh basketball tournament. The final score of the game was 62-2, although Kendall Appelbaum, freshman, said the score of the game could have been 100-2.
“The other team didn’t even know the rules of basketball,” Appelbaum said. “They double-dribbled, traveled and were very unorganized. They even shot at their own basket.”
Dave Olivo, head coach, made the team slow the offense down after the first half resulted in a score of 43-2. The leading scorer was Morgan Hummel, who scored 22 of the 62 points.
He said overall the team played well, but he couldn’t accurately judge their skill level based off of that game because the opponent didn’t provide much of a challenge.
Darcy Hachmeister, assistant coach, agreed with Olivo. She said the team played very well, but she was disappointed in the team’s ability to block out the other team when re-bounding the ball, which they will continue to work on in practice.
In the last play of the game the Mustangs did make Olivo proud by running their offensive play correctly for the first time.
“We shot the ball well but our rebounding needs some work,” Olivo said. “As far as the season goes, since we have a small team number wise, injuries will play a big part in our success. If we stay healthy, we will do well.”
