The Mustangs used their Suburban West leading offense (38 points per game) to power past the Warriors. Senior Matt Seevers, quarterback, rushed for four touchdowns along with a 10 for 14 day in the air. Mortenson appreciated the offensive effort, but he also said school spirit led the Mustangs to victory.
“The school and the students definitely did their part,” Mortensen said. “The whole week was great.”
The win put MHS in a three-way tie atop the Conference going into the final three games of the season-all district games.
Tonight, the Mustangs are set to take on CBC in their first district showdown. This marks the sixth time the teams have met in as many years.
CBC has the upper hand in the contests with a record of 3-2. Both teams have the same record, but CBC has been recognized by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as the number five team in the area. MHS is the third team “on the bubble.”
Coach Ryan Thornhill said he expects a very well-played game between the two teams.
“It doesn’t matter what a team’s record is,” Thornhill said. “You’re always going to see an intense game during districts.”
Junior Dalton Demos, CBC quarterback, has thrown for 1301 passing yards, good for 17 in the area. He is coming off of a 38-35 win over Chaminade, in which he threw for 183 yards and two interceptions.
“I know Marquette’s is going to be ready,” Demos said. “It’s going to be a real shootout…probably the hardest game we’ll play this year.”
On the other side, MHS has featured a steady defensive attack all year long, allowing less than 20 points per game. Junior Justin Bedell, linebacker, has paced the defense with 61 combined tackles and assists.
Mortenson said he hopes to accomplish making the playoffs for the second time in three years with the remaining three games on the regular season schedule. However, he said not setting goals too high before the season has helped the Mustangs get to six wins. Mortenson said last season the goals included winning districts.
“This year our goals were different,” Mortenson said. “We asked for a disciplined, hard working team instead, and it’s worked out well.
At tonight’s game, students will be able to get in for free if they bring at least two canned food items, a drive sponsored by St. Louis Food bank and MHS. Students are not able to use their MAP Scholar cards, as the game is a MSHAA district competition. The game begins at 7 p.m.
