Going into field hockey tryouts freshman year, seniors Shannon Regan, Christine Albertelli and Abbey Heller were just hoping to make the team. Fast forward three years and these girls have committed to play collegiate field hockey at it’s highest level.
“I didn’t think I could play at the Division One level until the beginning of my junior year,” Regan said.
Regan, who plays midfield, committed to play at Miami University in Oxford, OH. She is a four-year varsity player for the Mustangs.
Regan also received an offer to play at Central Michigan, but after evaluating the schools, she decided Miami was the perfect fit.
“I loved the campus, the coach and it is close to home,” Regan said.
In her first three seasons, Regan has a combined 19 goals and six assists. As a junior, she earned second team All-Metro honors.
Albertelli, defender, committed to continue playing the sport at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH.
As a junior, Albertelli finished third on the team with 11 points.
She received offers from multiple schools including Missouri State University, St. Louis University and Lehigh University, but ultimately decided to become a Wildcat.
“Many of my family members went there, the campus was really pretty and I loved the nutrition program that they had,” Albertelli said.
While in Durham, Albertelli said she expects the work to be tough, but rewarding in the end.
“I expect to be challenged, and learn a lot from the coaches,” Albertelli said.
Heller, forward, committed to play at Missouri State University. Coming off a four- goal junior year, Heller picked MSU over an offer from Kent State.
“There’s some cool people on the team and I really like the campus,” Heller said.
MSU also carried Heller’s major: film studies. Heller has high goals set for herself in college.
“Hopefully, I would like to be an all-time scorer in Missouri” Heller said.
While still having to wait for that first collegiate goal, Heller has already made a mark during her senior season for the Mustangs. In a 2-1 defeat of the defending State champions, MICDS, Heller scored one of the MHS goals.
The defeat of MICDS was no surprise for any of the three girls, who all said the Mustangs can be very good this season.
The Mustangs will try to improve their record when they face off with rival Lafayette today at 4:15.
