Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and it has evolved into something that can be used by anyone for any purpose at any time. That includes for the purpose of education.
“I use my Facebook page, Gable’s Marquette Chemistry Classes, as a method of communication to my students and/or parents,” Melissa Gable, chemistry teacher, said. “It is a fan page, so it is public to everyone. I put reminders on there about upcoming tests, quizzes, and projects.”
Gable also posts pictures from demos in class, like her Halloween Day demos, and she also posts any links that could be helpful to her students.
“I like using it because what I post appears on the student’s news feed that like the page,” Gable said.
Some teachers use the site to post notes or assignments. Others use it to post answers for assignments or future tests and quizzes. They don’t have the right idea in my mind.
Facebook is a distraction from schoolwork, so if a student were to go onto Facebook with the purpose of going to the page, they may see something on the news feed or get a notification and totally forget what they were on their to do.
Facebook already gets in the way of students doing their work.
Groups like “‘did you do your homework?’ ‘yes’ LOL jk, i was on facebook,” which has 15,855 people liking it, and “‘Are u doing ur homeowrk.’ ‘Yes mom’ ~minimize facebook~,” which has an astonishing 273,467 people liking it, make not doing homework and being on Facebook a “cool” thing
Those groups may come up when kids type things in like “homework” or “homework on Facebook”, instead of the homework and assignments the kids are on Facebook to see.
Some groups now have group chat, where if two students are on at the same time, they can chat on there, and possibly cheat and get homework or assignment answers, or maybe even answers to a test.
Facebook should not be used for educational reasons by teachers to any extent or for any reason. It is like telling kids that they can go on and find answers then get distracted on Facebook instead of doing the work they were supposed to.
