Students in Katie Bauman’s AP European History classes took time out of the classroom on Friday, Sept. 13, to chalk recreations of Renaissance paintings. They only had about 10 minutes to chalk them in chronological order before they discussed them.
Lindsay Wang, sophomore, draws the “Birth of Venus” with chalk. Her AP European history class was tasked with chalking out a picture of a painting from a specific historical time period.
Joshua Provow-Wall, sophomore, begins to sketch out his group’s picture, “The Crucifixion of Christ,” after drawing a cross section in their frame to help them recreate the painting faster. Before students started, they had to put themselves in chronological order by painting date and then mark out boundaries for their paintings.
Joshua Provow-Wall, sophomore, fills in a portion of his group’s chalk drawing, “The Crucifixion of Christ,” in the 10 minutes students had to complete their work.
Sophomores Emily Squires, Emma Colombo and Olivia Ellington recreate the painting “Salvator Mundi” by Leonardo Di Vinci from 1500. They picked this painting as they wanted to draw one of Leonardo da Vinci’s works.
One of the largest chalk paintings featured in the collection was the “Birth of Venus.” Students chalked their work on an overcast, drizzly day, but avoided a rain out.
Students from Bauman’s fifth hour AP Euro class work in groups to chalk their Renaissance paintings. Bauman had four total classes of students participate in the project throughout the day. Each class added to the timeline.
