“God is first, you are second”
This is the motto students involved in I Am Second strive to follow.
Every Friday morning from 7:30 a.m to 8 a.m in Room 317 a group of kids hold a bible study.
Senior, Angelina Kelly, co-founder of I Am Second, formed the club three years ago.
“My youth group leader took a bunch of us on a camping trip in 2010, and he brought up the idea to me, so I started it with Henry Wynd my sophomore year,” Kelly said.
At each meeting, the club watches a video testimony on someone telling their personal story on how they became closer to God. Afterward they have a group discussion on what the main message was and how they can take what they learned and use it in their lives.
“We started it so we could be a light in Marquette,” Kelly said.
Ruth Bontrager, math teacher, is the sponsor for the group and provides her room for the meetings.
Bontrager said that the students felt there was a hole in MHS and there wasn’t any other clubs for Christians, other than the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), which is mainly for athletes.
“We had to be very careful and clear things with the attorneys,” Bontrager said.
Before starting the group, members of the club had to talk to the Activities Director to help assure everything they wanted to do was legal within the school.
“Everyone is welcome to come; it’s not like we are not being exclusive,” said Bontrager. “Other kids can form their own clubs if they want to; they could have an Atheist club or whatever. But, there are some rules we have to follow. You can’t just do whatever you want.”
The club is open to all students, not only Christian, who want to learn more about God.
