Juniors Brandon Sexe, Drew Glick and Caleb Schaller formed the band Silent Uprising with Northwest juniors Andrew Stieren and Josh Peters four years ago. This summer, they will perform at the Battle at Busch Stadium in July.
How did the band start?
Glick: In eighth grade, we started as just Caleb, Brendon and me. We kind of grew into who we are now around freshman year, I believe.
Why Silent Uprising?
Glick: It’s a mystery!
What does each band member do?
Glick: I’m a drummer.
Sexe: I play the guitar and do back-up vocals, Caleb does the lead vocals, Andrew is the bassist and Josh is the other guitarist.
Which artists/bands influence your sound the most?
Glick: I’d say Travis Barker! He’s the Chuck Norris of drumming.
Schaller: [Pappa Roach and Nickelback concerts] give us stage presence ideas and ideas on how to talk to the crowd.
What is the biggest source of inspiration when it comes to writing songs?
Glick: When I write songs I use a lot of things but the biggest is life. When I’m feeling down, like I need to vent, or tell someone off without actually telling them off, I go grab my guitar and start playing.
Sexe: Drew and I write the songs. When I write my songs, I write every part but the drums; Drew does that. He’ll also write basic songs and then we add in more parts to make it more interesting and make it sound nice.
What’s the best part of being in a band?
Glick: Performing! Definitely performing!
Sexe: Being able to show other people the music you create.
Schaller: Being able to play music.
How would you describe your music?
Schaller: It’s very unique.
Glick: I’ve been told we sound a lot like Sum 41.
Sexe: We [also] sound like Switchfoot, Story of the Year and Anberlin. The band we probably sound the most like is Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.
What are some future plans for the band?
Glick: I’d like to do whatever! Hit it big, get a huge mansion. You know, the little things!
Sexe: We plan on playing at the Battle at Busch on July 6 and then hopefully record a new CD. We will be playing before the game and tickets are only $20 and are for the concert and the game. It costs $49 for just the ticket to the game itself, but we’re selling it cheaper because we’re awesome like that.
How do you prepare for shows?
Glick: We always pray as a band right before we go on stage.
Sexe: We pray that we all perform well and put on a good show that people will enjoy.
What’s your favorite part of performing?
Sexe: It’s fun to have stage presence. Everyone else feeds off of how you perform on stage and they have a good time.
