Italy. Spain. France. Switzerland. Slovenia. Mongolia. These are only some of the countries students and staff have visited.
With Spring Break two weeks away and summer not too far behind, travel will be inevitable for some students and staff members. While traveling is great for fun, students also can gain a lot from their trip, Abby Censky, sophomore, said.
Abby Censky, sophomore, will be visiting Greece this summer and has traveled extensively throughout Europe, visiting Italy, Spain, France, Belgium, Turkey, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, in addition to various parts of the U.S.
“Italy was my favorite because of the beautiful scenery along Cinque Terre – five villages on the ocean coast,” Censky said. “I’ve also spent the most time there.”
Censky said she has learned how to be a global citizen from travelling.
“Traveling has enlightened me,” Censky said. “I’ve learned to accept and respect different cultures.”
Amy Doyle, history teacher, also has traveled in the past to cities like London, Paris, Rome and Florence and countries like Mongolia, Jamaica and Slovenia. Doyle’s favorite city she has visited is the capital of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.
“[Traveling] has taught me how other people live – it’s so fascinating seeing how similar we are,” Doyle said. “It’s taught me to be tolerant and accepting of customs, beliefs.”
While traveling, one of the most important things one can do it be aware, Tricia Bersett, travel agent at Travel Thyme, said.
“Most importantly everyone should be smart while traveling, travel with others, and be aware of your surroundings,” Bersett said.
Doyle concurs with Bersett’s tips.
“Not everyone can be trusted,” Doyle said. “Keep your money on you at all times, and don’t leave valuables out.”
Censky also warns of pickpockets and urges travelers to keep track of how much money they have left as well as some other tips.
“You also should be aware of train and bus times and where the restrooms are,” Censky said.
Censky said all of her tips are based on personal experiences.
“If you’re driving a rental car, have back up gas with you,” Censky said. “[My family and I] were driving in Italy when we ran out of gas.”
Bersett also said she recommends visiting the government travel site for more information.
For Censky and Doyle, traveling has been overwhelmingly beneficial.
“With traveling, you get to experience things you wouldn’t ordinarily in the United States,” Censky said. “You get to meet new people and experience exotic cuisine. It’s constant learning.”
Doyle said it is great to experience different cultures while you’re young.
“Being young is a great time to travel without family and job obligations,” Doyle said. “Just remember to be open minded and have fun.”
