Hailey Wexler, senior, was recognized on Monday, Oct. 25 as the school winner for MHS in the national contest for the Wendy’s High School Heisman (WHSH) award.
According to www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com, the program judges students based on their academic achievements, community service involvement and athletic accomplishments. Students must be high school seniors of the Class of ’11, have maintainted at least a 3.0 GPA during their three years in high school and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.
Mark Linneman, Activities Director, said the coaches at MHS have the opportunity to nominate student-athletes each year and the nominees then have to go through the online application process at www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com. This year, MHS had about seven nominees, Linneman said.
“It’s a very nice award,” Linneman said. “One boy and girl applicant is picked from each high school and then they determine who are the school, state and national winners.”
Wexler is a member of the varsity cheerleading squad and said she was excited to be chosen as a representative for MHS.
“It’s something that will look good on college applications,” Wexler said.
From the WHSH school winners, the field is narrowed to 1,020 state finalists – 10 male and 10 female nominees per state, including the District of Columbia.
The list of state finalists will be posted on www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com on Friday, Oct. 29.
