The Future Business Leaders of America’s one and only student versus staff basketball game was battled out in December of 2019. Until now.

FBLA will host its second student versus staff basketball game during both Ac Lab mods on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Tickets are on sale from Monday, Dec. 12 to Wednesday, Dec. 14, at lunch and in Room 326 for $2.

The game will consist of four 10-minute quarters and two 5-minute halftimes between quarters two and three. The halftime performers are still being decided. The theme is purple, representing the March of Dimes, the FBLA National Organization’s philanthropy partner. The March of Dimes advocates for premature babies and their mothers.

“The point of the game is to benefit our charity partner and help our students with the costs of travel for competition,” Crystal Strate, FBLA sponsor and business teacher, said.
FBLA will donate $1 from every ticket to the March of Dimes.

FBLA is a national organization for students interested in the field of business. The MHS chapter doesn’t require students to be enrolled in a business class to join.

The club competes in Districts, State and National competitions, with more than 70 different events available for students to choose to participate in.

“This year’s seniors were freshmen, so it’s been a little rough getting the word out and trying to get people to participate,” Strate said. “In 2019, it was a great event that people seemed to really enjoy.”

There are also other teachers alongside Strate organizing the event, and all FBLA members are expected to contribute in some way, she said. So far, there are 14 students confirmed to be participating, with 11 teachers and administrators, such as Senior Principal Dr. Rick Regina, Freshman Principal Kyle Devine, art teacher Kelsey Starr, and Study Hall teacher Kristi Rutsch.

Erin Sullenger, social studies teacher, played in the original game three years ago.

They’re reffing and may be a little biased. Overall, I’m excited to see our hard work come together and I think it’ll be a fun event for everyone involved.

“It was fun playing and being competitive with the students,” Sullenger said.

Sullenger said she also has played in the student versus staff flag football game that takes place during Homecoming week, so she looks forward to participating in more competitions between herself, her coworkers and her students, such as the FBLA basketball game.

“One thing I remember about the 2019 game is that I ended up on the free throw line and made a couple shots,” Sullenger said.

This will be senior Jamell Jones’s first time playing in the game.

“I thought it would be a fun experience,” Jones said. “I’m excited to give it my all and hopefully see some turnout.”

Jones does not play for the basketball team, but said he enjoys playing basketball outside of school.

Senior Kaitlyn Maloy, FBLA president thinks the staff will win.

“They’re reffing and may be a little biased,” FBLA President Kaitlyn Maloy, senior, said. “Overall, I’m excited to see our hard work come together and I think it’ll be a fun event for everyone involved.”
