Marquette Defeats Mehlville in First Playoff Game of Season

The Mustangs defeated the Mehlville Panthers 48-0 in the first playoff game of the season.

Jason Powers threw for three touchdown passes in the victory.

“We just stayed focused the whole time.” Powers said. “We knew what we had to do. We’d beaten them earlier so we just wanted to come out and do the same thing.”

Powers applauded his team’s defense, which recorded an unprecedented sixth shutout in ten games this season.

“They’ve been huge. Shutting out six teams is big.” Said Powers. “It doesn’t happen to often so that’s awesome.”

Highlights of the game include a 44 yard touchdown for Xavier Jackson, junior, and a 93 yard kickoff return by Wendall Bronner Jr., sophomore.

Matt Klein, varsity football coach, credited the fans with establishing the momentum that proved to important in the win.

“The fans did a great job.” Said Klein. “ Anytime you get some people in the stands it creates some energy and our kids just feed off of it.”

Klein said that the team’s victory came down to their practice during the week.
“We tried to crank up our intensity in practice this week to kind of create that playoff atmosphere and everything we wanted.” Klein said. “We thought our kids responded really well and we’re very proud of them.”
