Students reflect on this year’s Spirit Week

The week before Homecoming is Spirit Week for MHS staff and students. Spirit Week is when each day has a theme to dress up for, and teachers tally up all the students that participated in the different grades in order to win a tailgating party before the homecoming football game.  Also during each lunch shift, grades compete in games put on by administrators, like eating blended Happy Meals or dancing.

This year, Monday was Get Up and Go Day, Tuesday was Nerd Day, Wednesday was Celebrity Day, Thursday was Trading Places Day, and Friday was Mustang Spirit/Under the Sea Day.

“To figure out what spirit days we will have, in STUCO we vote on ideas that anyone has,” said sophomore Sierra Hollenbeck, Spirit Vice President. “We choose popular days from last year and we take new ideas from other STUCO members.”

During Spirit Week, students also can participate in other activities to get pumped up for Homecoming, such as the in-school pep rally, the out of school pep rally, junior vs. senior powder puff game or the bonfire.

“My favorite part of spirit week itself is probably the dance, and this year I would say the most popular spirit days are Get Up and Go Day and Nerd Day in a close second,” said Hollenbeck.

Hollenbeck said the least successful days were Celebrity Day, where people dress as someone famous, or Switch Up Day, where students dress as a teacher, because students seemed to participate in other days more often or had trouble thinking of someone to dress as.

“My favorite spirit day is Get Up and Go Day because it lets you feel really comfortable all day long,” Fazeela Kazmi, sophomore, said. “ The best costume I saw all week was a girl who dressed as Snooki.”
