Carl Taraporevala, sophomore, and Drew Mathers, sophomore, pratice lines together in preparation of their audition for the “Glass Menagerie” play on May 15. Taraporevala and Mathers have been participating in theater since last year, both on cast for “Legally Blond”, and participating in other MTC productions in either crew or cast.

For Rebecca Blindauer, theater director,  “The Glass Menagerie” is one of her favorite plays. Now, the Marquette Theater Company (MTC) will perform it in late October of next school year, in addition to the musical in December and the play in the spring.

“I didn’t think it would be a good opportunity for a lot of kids to be involved because it only has four characters,” Blindauer said. “Then I thought, ‘Oh, if I add an extra performance, maybe we could do it’.”

It’s a very heartbreaking play because of the situation. There are really great characters for four actors to get to dig into.

Set in St. Louis, the play written by Tennessee Williams is about a mother and her two grown children in the Great Depression Era. The son, obligated to help his mother at home, struggles to achieve his own goals and dreams, while the daughter suffers from a limp and is debilitatingly shy. The name of the play comes from the daughter’s collection of glass zoo animals that she adores.

“It’s a very heartbreaking play because of the situation,” Blindauer said. “There are really great characters for four actors to get to dig into.”

Bryson Weaver, senior, said he is excited to audition for the new play as it is more intimate of a production than MTC’s traditional plays or One-Acts, with only a four-person cast.

“It’s a first in MTC history to add a third show and there are only four people in the cast, and it would be incredible to be one of the four people,” Weaver said.

Weaver decided to audition for Tom Wingfield, as he feels he is typically typecast as a stern person, but there is also a soft side to the character.

Overall, Weaver said that he likes the idea of the play due to the deep connections an audience can make with the characters.

“You can nitpick every little motivation between each character and pick out reasons why you connect to that person,” Weaver said.

Anvi Rani, sophomore, will be co-stage manager.

Rani said she is excited to see how it turns out.

“I haven’t seen the actual show itself but I have heard thoughts, and it’s one of B’s favorite plays too,” Rani said.

Rani has been working as assistant stage manager for “Pippin” and “Clue,” and said she is looking forward to working on the new addition.

Auditions for The Glass Menagerie begin on Monday, May 15th.
