Emma Hayes, junior, takes a picture of two yearbook members for an Instagram post. She runs the account with Laura Carlton, junior, where they try to post at least 2 times a week.

When Jessica Kellerman, senior, first created the Medical Intervention (MI) Instagram account with her class, she posted a get-well soon message to a fellow classmate who was sick that day.

We wanted to make a post to show him we were thinking about him,” Kellerman said.

Ever since then, the students in the class have been sending various memes and behind-the-scenes vlogs of what they are working on to Kellerman, who volunteered to keep the account active. She posts on the account once a week to showcase what happens at Marquette’s MI class compared to other MI classes at nearby schools.

We try to post things to show what our class is accomplishing and what the class environment is like— always crazy.

“My favorite thing to post are the vlogs,” Kellerman said. “It showcases the personalities of my classmates and the lighthearted energy the class has.”

Like Kellerman, Kaitlyn Maloy, senior, also decided to start an Instagram account with a classmate for their Authentic Science Research 3 (ASR) class to help encourage underclassmen to join next year.

“ASR is so individual,” Maloy said. “There are no two people doing the same thing at any one given time.”

The posts range from fun vlogs to student accomplishments, which Maloy tries to highlight frequently.

“We try to post things to show what our class is accomplishing and what the class environment is like— always crazy,” Maloy said.

Cathy Farrar, ASR teacher, said she likes the idea of the account, but hopes it doesn’t give a false impression of what goes on in the ASR classroom.

“I think it is a fun way to connect with each other,” Farrar said.

Unlike ASR and MI Instagram accounts, which focus on the daily activities of specifically students in those classes, the Yearbook Production class has an account where they aim to shine light on the entire student population at MHS.

Emma Hayes, junior, is one of two social media managers for the yearbook Instagram account.

The account started in 2020, but wasn’t posted consistently. Hayes said she helped revamp the account last September in hopes of getting more students interested in yearbook.

“We wanted to show how much fun it is to take pictures and do interviews,” Hayes said.

In addition to helping with Instagram, Hayes also started a TikTok account, which the staff aims to post on at least once every two weeks.

Laura Carlton, junior, is the other social media manager with Hayes. Carlton helps plan posts for the week, with a schedule of at least two posts on Instagram every week.

“We wanted to get the page out there and engage with the students of Marquette,” Carlton said.
